As former First Lady of the United States and United Nations delegate, Eleanor Roosevelt spearheaded the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and spoke out against racism, poverty, injustice and oppression. Using Mrs. Roosevelt as a role model, the Girls' Leadership Workshop at the Eleanor Roosevelt Center at Val-Kill (ERVK) promotes the empowerment of young women regionally, nationally and internationally through a nine-day leadership training program. Poverty is a chronic lack of money, goods, or other necessities required for a minimal existence. Welfare refers to government policies intended to provide solutions to the problems of poverty, including homelessness, lack of medical care, care of the aged, etc.
