District Six Museum Displacement ICOM–U.S. Celebrates Sites of Conscience Impact on Human Rights and Civic Engagement

District Six Museum memorialises the history of forced removals under the Apartheid system in South Africa, and uses the process of remembering to challenge all forms of social oppression. The Museum's Ambassadors Program trains teenagers to discuss the history of displacement and racism in District Six with their peers, families and community members in order to promote values of community and tolerance.

Displacement happens when people are forced from their homes and communities as a result of deliberate actions taken by other human beings for reasons that range from war, ethnic cleansing, and political differences to urban renewal. A refugee is a displaced person who has fled or was forced to flee his or her own country. Internment is when a displaced person is confined within a definite area. Where have people faced similar issues in the past? May 25, 2010 -The International Council of Museums–U.S. (ICOM-U.S.) awarded its 2010 International Service Citation to the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience, recognizing the impact of Sites of Conscience in the museum field, and the Coalition’s leadership in museum-based international relations. read more
