The mission of The Hart Island Project is to assist low-income, marginalized people to preserve their histories, gain access to information and gravesites of friends and relatives buried on Hart Island, Bronx, NY. We work to de-stigmatize city burials for those who cannot afford a private burial or choose a city burial for any reason.
Our work led to the end of 150 years of penal control of Hart Island in 2019. With the passage of legislation transferring Hart Island to Parks, our focus now is to place Hart Island on the National Registry of Historic Places and have it designated a National Monument.
