The institutions that make up the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience (ICSC) and its Latin American and Caribbean Regional Network (RESLAC) strongly repudiate the terrorist actions that occurred last Sunday, January 8, in the city of Brasilia, when the three branches of the Brazilian state were invaded and vandalized by organized right-wing groups identified with former president Jair Bolsonaro. These actions of extreme violence, which systematically and in a coordinated maner seek to disrupt the rule of law, are the greatest threat to democracy in Brazil since its return in 1985 after 21 years of military dictatorship.

Since 2017, ICSC and RESLAC, together with Brazilian Sites of Conscience that integrate them have been denouncing the increasing circulation of public discourses imbued with symbolic violence and hate in Brazil as well as the openly anti-democratic positions and extreme intolerance against social and political groups expressed by different public authorities, including the former president, his ministers, parliamentarians and support groups. These expressions of hate, as well as the denialist manifestations about the last military dictatorship during the years of the Bolsonaro government in Brazil, sowed the seeds of violence and contempt that on the January 8 were manifested in the destructive actions against the democratically instituted powers and authorities, and the cultural and artistic symbols represented by the city of Brasilia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized as an icon of the Rule of Law.

The International Coalition of Sites of Conscience and its Latin American and Caribbean Regional Network vehemently repudiate these actions and accompany the places of memory in Brazil, members of this network, in the demand for justice and clarification of the facts that occurred, categorically rejecting any attempt at amnesty. At the same time, as institutions that work with memory, we believe it is necessary that the Brazilian State adopt judicial, educational, and political measures to confront the threats to democracy caused by the extreme right.

As instituições que compõem a Coalizão Internacional de Sítios de Consciência e sua Rede Latino-Americana e Caribenha de Lugares de Memória (RESLAC) repudiam veementemente as ações terroristas ocorridas no último domingo, 8 de janeiro, na cidade de Brasília, quando os três poderes do estado brasileiros foram invadidos e vandalizados por grupos organizados de direita, identificados com o ex-presidente Jair Bolsonaro. Essas ações de extrema violência que, de forma sistemática e organizada buscam sistematicamente a interrupção do Estado de Direito, são a maior ameaça à democracia no Brasil desde o seu retorno em 1985, após 21 anos de ditadura militar.

Desde 2017, a Coalizão e a RESLAC, juntamente com os Sítios de Consciência brasileiros que as integram vem denunciando a crescente circulação de discursos públicos impregnados de violência simbólica e de ódio no Brasil assim como as posições abertamente antidemocráticas e extrema intolerância contra grupos sociais e políticos expressa por diferentes autoridades públicas, incluindo o ex-presidente, seus ministros, parlamentares e grupos de apoio. Essas expressões de ódio, assim como as manifestações negacionistas sobre a última ditadura militar durante os anos do governo Bolsonaro no Brasil, semearam a violência e o desprezo que no dia 8 se manifestou nas ações destrutivas contra os poderes e autoridades democraticamente instituídas, e aos símbolos culturais e artísticos representados pela cidade de Brasília, Patrimônio da Humanidade pela UNESCO e reconhecida como um ícone do Estado de Direito.

A Coalizão e a RESLAC repudiam veementemente essas ações e acompanham os lugares de memória do Brasil, membros desta rede, na exigência por justiça e esclarecimento dos fatos ocorridos, rejeitando categoricamente qualquer tentativa de anistia. Ao mesmo tempo, como instituições que trabalham a memória, acreditamos ser necessário que o Estado brasileiro adote medidas judiciais, educativas e políticas para enfrentar as ameaças à democracia provocada pela extrema direita.
