Located in Tlaxcoaque Square in Mexico City, Tlaxcoaque Sitio de Memoria seeks to preserve the remaining part of the building that housed the General Directorate of Police and Transit of the Federal District Department between 1957 and 1983. Tlaxcoaque basements were witness to serious human rights violations perpetrated against countless people— all arbitrarily detained and whose stories deserve clarification and the search for truth, justice and reparation. Among the people illegally detained in this space were political dissidents, student and union groups, people who belonged to groups of sexual diversity, women, doctors and nurses who performed abortions, and countless other cases of judicial abuse.

The Mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum PhD commissioned the site, and it was unveiled in October of 2022. A virtual documentation center is physically installed in a building of the Secretariat of Culture of Mexico City, in order to facilitate access to the information contained in archives, photo libraries and libraries to persons subject to the law. The space that was rescued will now be a site of unalterable memory, to vindicate and honor the memory of victims who were taken to the Tlaxcoaque basements.
