Founded in 2021 by descendants of Black abolitionist and Underground Railroad operative Wilson Bruce Evans and members of the Oberlin community, the Wilson Bruce Evans Home Historical Society is dedicated to the rehabilitation of the home Evans built in 1856 at 33 East Vine Street in Oberlin, and its opening as a museum and educational center exploring the history of the Evans family, their descendants, and the long struggle for racial justice in Oberlin, in the region, and more broadly in the United States. We are now engaged in a multi-year construction project to ready this National Historic Landmark for its future when, through community engagement, discussions and exhibitions, the restored Evans House will provide an authentic historic setting where all visitors—neighborhood residents, national tourists, and international guests alike– can find new ways to understand the painful history of enslavement, the difficult fight for emancipation, the sacrifices made by Black leaders, and the long and yet unfinished project of racial justice.
