Academic Affiliates

UMass Amherst Public History Program intern Julie Peterson prototyped an interactive experience with visitors at Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site in Philadelphia, PA in 2015.

Our Academic Affiliates Program (AAP) invites academic staff, faculty members, programs and departments in higher education to work in partnership with the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience’s (ICSC) global network of museums, parks, historic sites, and places of memory. In doing so, the AAP aims to strengthen bonds between academics and those working in the fields of memory, heritage and human rights in order to help the public better understand the connection between history and social justice today. Specifically, we work together to:

  • Expand and deepen collaboration among academics across the world committed to the intersection of justice, history, place, and civic engagement.
  • Increase opportunities for students to learn from or get involved at ICSC member sites around the world
  • Create opportunities for academics, students, and ICSC member sites to share resources, ideas, skills, and experiences.

As an Academic Affiliate, we ask that you commit to these three shared objectives, participate in quarterly virtual gatherings, and pay an annual fee. Current Academic Affiliate institutions are listed on this page.

The benefits of becoming an academic affiliate align with the Program’s three primary objectives listed above.

  1. Expand and deepen collaboration among academics across the world committed to justice and civic engagement.
  • Get connected to a network of academics passionate about the intersection of memory, history, justice, and human rights.
  • Participate in virtual quarterly affiliate gatherings to increase connection, learning, and collaboration.
  • Participate in affiliate-driven thematic virtual discussions.
  • Connect with affiliates in-person at related conferences or convenings.
  • You will be listed on the ICSC’s Academic Affiliates webpage.

  • Get connected to member sites willing to host student tours and student projects.
  1. Create opportunities for academics, students, and member sites to share resources, ideas, skills, and experiences.

  • Help your students learn about Sites of Conscience by inviting ICSC staff to share our work at one of your classes each year.
  • Receive a 10% discount on ICSC workshops for students or faculty in the arc of dialogue, creativity, community engagement, and more.
