Transforming Transitional Justice: A Podcast

Released in April 2024, Transforming Transitional Justice is a podcast from ICSC’s flagship program Global Initiative for Justice, Truth, and Reconciliation (GIJTR), a consortium of nine global organizations that works alongside communities to amplify the voices of survivors and inspire collective action in countries struggling to confront human rights violations.

The series focuses on rethinking how traditional transitional justice processes after a conflict can better serve the needs of civilians affected by periods of violence and authoritarian regimes. Each episode will focus, through GIJTR’s unique, survivor-centered lens, on common issues that post-conflict communities face, from bolstering communities abilities to search for their missing, to documenting violations, to helping victims heal from conflict-related sexual violence. The series contains six episodes, which are released bi-weekly.

Episodes

Episode 2: Finding a Way Forward After Conflict-Related Sexual Violence

“Because sexual and gender-based violence was so widespread, it became the norm and women didn’t have places to report these violations because they couldn’t trust anybody,” explains Fatou Baldeh, a Gambian survivor and activist, in our second episode of “Transforming Transitional Justice,” which examines the complexities of healing after conflict-related sexual violence – on individual and community levels – and provides strategies for practitioners to support this work. Episode 1: Toward a Survivor-Centered Model of Transitional Justice

“What I hear over and over again from survivors is that they want to tell their stories.”

This insight and so many more are available now in our latest podcast, “Transforming Transitional Justice.” The series highlights the work of ICSC’s Global Initiative for Justice, Truth and Reconciliation (GIJTR), which equips communities in post-conflict settings to foster justice and peace by amplifying the experiences and expertise of survivors. In this opening episode, you’ll hear from the program’s founders about the importance of creating holistic, grassroots approaches to transitional justice, and learn why mainstreaming psychosocial support throughout them is so vital to their success.
