German Emigration Center (Germany)

The German Emigration Center (GEC), or Deutsches Auswandererhaus, offers an immersive exploration of Europe’s migration history, preserving the personal stories of emigrants who departed from Bremerhaven, once one of Germany’s busiest emigration ports. Through reconstructed scenes and multimedia exhibits, visitors experience migration’s emotional and social dimensions while gaining new perspectives on a country in transition. Its educational programs, designed for children, families, school groups, and adults, link historical and contemporary migration to everyday life and society.

By presenting a comparative approach to migration, both from and to Germany, the GEC offers insights into the broader impact of migration on individuals and communities. Visitors have the opportunity to discover new perspectives on migration’s emotional and social dimensions. The GEC’s establishment of the Academy of Comparative Migration Studies (ACOMIS) in 2021, along with its research library, supports ongoing research and education, fostering thoughtful reflection on migration in today’s world. The German Emigration Center ensures that the lessons of migration history continue to resonate with today’s global challenges, inviting visitors to consider the ongoing impacts of migration on individuals and societies.
