The McLeod Plantation Historic Site and the Caw Caw Interpretive Center are former plantations owned and operated by Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission.

The Caw Caw Interpretive Center, which opened in 2000, explores the impact of people from the rice-growing regions of Africa on the landscape, history and culture of South Carolina’ Lowcountry region. It is the site of the 1739 Stono Slave Rebellion, the largest organized emancipation effort by enslaved people in English North America.  It’s currently undergoing evaluation for listing as a National Historic Landmark and inclusion as a central feature of Charleston, South Carolina’s application for World Heritage Site designation. When McLeod Plantation Historic Site opened in 2015 its focus was on the nearly 100 enslaved people at the former cotton plantation and their descendants’ ongoing quest for freedom. Interpretation includes the 21st century and the site is committed to engaging in conversations around racism and social justice.
