Memorial da Democrácia da Paraíba (Brazil)

Memorial da Democrácia da Paraíba, established by decree 33.426 on October 31, 2012, is located at the Casa de José Américo Foundation in João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil. It was established to preserve the collection gathered during the investigations of the State Truth and Memory Preservation Commission of Paraíba into the country’s dictatorial regimes from 1946 to 1988. The Memorial also houses records from the former Political and Social Order Police Station, an institution that monitored, repressed, and tortured those who opposed Brazil’s military dictatorship.

The Memorial’s mission is to preserve and promote memory as a fundamental human right through its Antifascist Education program. This program engages current and future generations, fostering critical thinking about national and local history. It aims to preserve and reinterpret the memories of the repression era in Paraíba. Additionally, the Memorial is dedicated to expanding its collection on themes of repression, resistance, and the fight for democracy. It actively collaborates with human rights organizations in Paraíba, builds partnerships with academic, museum, and archival institutions nationally and internationally, and supports other initiatives focused on preserving human rights history.
